Survivor 48 - Brooklyn South Update #8

Before we get started, a reminder of who has whom:

Remaining Lifelines: Mitch

Second, no one got bonus points for knowing the smug jerk criticizing David for using all the muscles except the one that mattered was Agent Smith!

We return to camp following Chrissy’s entry into the “Who? I don’t remember her at all” book of forgotten Survivor players. Alas, Poor Chrissy. We hardly knew ye!  Shauhin, who Chrissy was targeting, seems non-plussed about her being gone.  She barely mattered to him at all.   David tries to smooth things over with Kamila, saying he was worried about Chrissy’s shot in the dark.  Kamila flat-out calls him a horrible liar.  He’s dead to her.

Mama Mia! That's a spicy meatball!

For the 10th time in a week, we hear that David wanted Kamila to go (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’” [David] to George!)  as he questions Kyle’s hesitancy to vote for her.

The following morning, The Strong Six (which sounds like a name  Stan Lee would cook up)  ruin the beautiful sunrise by rehashing last week’s “DUDE KAMILA!”  vs “NO DUDE, NOT KAMILA” battle.  (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’ [Kyle] to Kyle!). Kyle keeps Shauhin on his side, saying David and Mary don’t trust him, which has the benefit of being true. Shauhin thinks they’re afraid of his relationship with Kamila.  I have to wonder how he feels watching this back.  They agree that Mary is a good target.

David realizes they’re gone and takes that to mean they’re working together.  He and Mary tell Eva about their worry, but she thinks they’re paranoid

And just because he's an arrogant ass doesn't mean he's wrong

Eva struggles to handle the tension between David and Kyle.  Kyle tries to smooth things over with David, but he can’t get past Kyle’s pushback on keeping Kamila.  He knows there’s a lie there - but he’s not a smooth enough player to exploit it. He’s a sledgehammer where he needs to be a scalpel.  Like Greek heroes he resembles, it’s his Achilles heel and likely to be his downfall.  Kamila’s 100% right when she said he was a terrible liar.

That night, Eva sneaks out of camp to get her advantage.  She thinks she’s silent enough, but Shauhin hears her leave.  He wakes up Joe who could not possibly care less, telling Shauhin to go back to bed and we’ll talk in the morning.

Eva approaches a torchlit area and finds a scroll that says she’s earned an extra vote (7 points for “Obtain a secret advantage” [Eva] to Tom!) but if she risks it in a 50/50 chance, she can earn Safety Without Power.  I’d risk it here. That’s a BIG advantage.  Eva does risk her vote and succeeds! (3 points for “Risk vote and succeed) [Eva] to Tom!).  Finally, she has another choice – Risk Safety Without Power in a 1/3 chance to gain a hidden immunity idol.   I wouldn’t do that – and neither does Eva.  She smartly walks out, the proud owner of a hidden immunity idol AND Safety Without Power.  If she can play them right, she’s going to walk to the final five.

The following morning, Eva immediately comes clean about her journey and her advantage which raises her up in Shauhin’s eyes.  While Kyle and Kamila try to figure a way around David and Mary, he tells his secret partner about Eva’s advantage.  It’s Rule #1 for this exact reason.  Kyle and David both put Joe and Eva in the middle by telling them who the others are working with, and that they’re flipping.

Joe’s a trustworthy guy, and David being a bullying jerk doesn’t make him wrong.  Everything he says to Joe and Eva about Kyle and Kamila is right, but it doesn’t penetrate.  David’s frustration increases to the point where he accuses Joe of going back on his word.

A step too far

Joe’s not a guy that will take that well.  Realizing he’s over the line David apologizes to Joe but that’s going to sit for a long time.  He’s blind in his trust for Kyle, and Shauhin, but has lost trust in David.

We get a bit of Kyle’s backstory as he and Joe watch Star learn to swim.  Kyle had a misspent youth, which landed him in jail for a while.  I honestly did not see that in him at all. I don’t know if it was vulnerability or gameplay, but that level of personal connection cements Joe in Kyle’s camp against David.  Joe sees David’s demeanor has changed and is stressing out about working with him.  Talking later with Eva, she sees their paranoia breaking the alliance into open warfare, as she tries to be the glue that holds them together. She has all the power, but she may have to rely on Joe to tell her when to use it.  Considering the blind spot Joe has with Kyle and Shauhin, that could be problematic.

At the Immunity and Reward challenge, they have to hold a handle clamping a ball in place. If they let go, or step off the pedestal, they’re out, which happens to Star faster than I can type it.  (3 points for “First person out in a challenge” [Star] to Stephanie!). She’s quickly followed by Mary, Kamila, Mitch and Eva. Shauhin and Kyle follow shortly after as we get another Joe vs. David showdown.

Arrogance

These two are dominant at this kind of challenge. 17 minutes in and David again looks like he’s barely trying while Joe is close to dropping.  Audacious braggart that he is, David tells Joe he’ll pick him for reward.

Seriously

Just as I start thinking how they’re done with him, David loses his balance and steps off the platform! Joe wins!  (16 points for “Win individual immunity” and “Win individual reward” [Joe] to Jo!).  Two stories at the end of this – the smile on Joe’s face and the despair on David’s, who openly says he should have won that because he’s got more in the tank.  Personally, I think the Ghost of Rudy Boesch pushed him off that platform for being so arrogant.

Joe gets to pick three people to go on reward.  David’s smugness probably costs him here too, because strategically he’s a good choice. Instead, Joe takes Mitch (who hadn’t had a single reward yet, and was clearly promised to be taken), Shauhin and Eva.  (3 points for “Chosen to go on reward” [Mitch, Shauhin, Eva] to Will, Tom and no one!)

Mary comforts a nearly inconsolable David back at camp.  This is a cracked mirror image of how Joe comforted Eva earlier in the season. No one started targeting Eva and Joe because of how close they were, but everyone’s talking about Mary and David for that reason.

They decide to vote Mitch because “He’s the only other clear target”.  I wonder why Kamila is off the table now.  Wouldn’t a “We did what you wanted and voted Chrissy, now it’s your turn” conversation be worth having?   As Star approaches them about voting Shauhin, David again turns into a sledgehammer in search of something to smash rather than a scalpel and immediately shoots her down due to Shauhin’s idol.

Author’s note: Let’s all recall why David thinks Shauhin has an idol.  Because Kyle and Kamila told him so.  The same Kyle and Kamila he’s been “questioning” for two weeks and is now working against. His belief in their lie led him to “Shauhin and Kamila are working together”, which led to “We should vote out Kamila”, which led to the blow ups with Kyle. Their play destroyed his game, and he’s not smart enough to put it together.  They Outwitted and Outplayed him BADLY.

While Mitch starts gathering the troops, telling Joe, Eva and Shauhin that David should be the target, Sahuhin is ready to take the credit for planting the seeds (5 points for “Say the title of the episode” [Shauhin] to Will!)

David tries again to convince Eva that they can’t trust Shauhin and Kyle, but Eva’s not ready to hear it (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’” [Eva] to Tom!). Mary thinks Shauhin will flip, and they pitch Eva about Shauhin playing his idol for Kamila. He doesn't even have an idol! And even if he did, his reaction to that would be something like...

When Kyle approaches Eva about voting for David, her heart breaks.  She doesn’t want to turn but Shauhin is all over it.   When Eva and Joe hash it out, they land on “We aren’t going back on our word because David already went back on his when he started going after Kyle. Tell yourself whatever helps you sleep at night, I guess

At tribal council, Joe talks about knowing your own strengths and weaknesses. That level of self-unawareness is shocking.  Between David’s Greek Hero level fatal flaws, and Joe’s faith in people who’ll certainly be working against him in the next day or so, the two of them are completely blind to their own faults.  Add in Eva, who’s so locked in with her people she can’t see that they might work against her, and its…

David, Joe and Eva

Mary channels Chrissy’s mistake from last week and talks about the need to earn credibility with the jury. And while it’s great to strike first, what if you do and the other person was never going to strike?

David thinks open honesty can still win this game, which Kamila thinks is a bold statement.  Star openly laughs at that, saying “Kamila’s here saying ‘you’re playing your own game, and that’s cute, but I don’t care what game you’re playing.  If you put me over there, you’re not getting my vote.”  Kyle simplifies it – you can’t win if you’re don’t get to the end.

At the vote, Mary is chosen to go first (5 points for “Chosen to vote first at tribal council” [Mary] to Bobby!)

David and Mary stick to their plan and vote for Mitch, along with Star.  Everyone else is tired enough of the paranoia to break up the Strong Six, enlisting Mitch and Kamila to join them in voting out David, who becomes Juror #3

(3 points for “Received vote against” [Mitch] to no one!)

(6 points for “Received vote against” [David] to George!)

(-1 point for “The tribe has spoken” [David] against George!)

(1 point for “Jury member” [David] to George!)

The downfall of arrogance

But what does that mean for our scores?

Tom had a 16-point lead coming in.  Thanks to Eva’s finding advantage, and risking her vote to get another, his lead has exploded to 29 points!  Kyle remains in 2nd place, but thanks to Joe’s individual immunity and reward win, Jo’s almost caught him. Jo’s got a way to go to catch Tom but there are still a lot of points out there!  I remain in 4th thanks to Kamila….doing nothing. Will remains in 5th but he cut my lead over him in half. George remains in 6th, keeping pace with Will while Stephanie and Bobby wonder if their players are even on the show anymore.

George lost David, and takes Mitch as the final Lifeline.  From here on out, we’re playing without a net!

At the vote, Mary is chosen to go first (5 points for “Chosen to vote first at tribal council” [Mary] to Scott!)

David and Mary stick to their plan and vote for Mitch, along with Star.  Everyone else is tired enough of the paranoia to break up the Strong Six, enlisting Mitch and Kamila to join them in voting out David, who becomes Juror #3

(3 points for “Received vote against” [Mitch] to Carol!)

(6 points for “Received vote against” [David] to no one!)

(-1 point for “The tribe has spoken” [David] against no one!)

(1 point for “Jury member” [David] to no one!)

The downfall of arrogance

But what does that mean for our scores?

Leader Ricky had a 3-point lead coming into the week. He’s got a 13-point lead coming out of it! 2nd place Carol gains 12 thanks to Mitch going on reward, and some bonus points while Marissa had a sneaky 9-point week thanks to Star dropping first in the challenge and bonus points of her own! 4th place Roberta finally passes now-5th place Dalphyne thanks to Joe’s heroics, gaining 17 points to Dalphyne’s 1.  6th place Jay remains a few ahead of me in 7th but pay attention to 8th place Kristyn.  She gained 14 points this week and it’s easy to see Shauhin start making a run here.

Survivor 48 - Brooklyn South Update #7

Before we get started, a reminder of who has whom

Remaining lifelines: Chrissy, Mitch

Second, 5 bonus points to Tom for knowing the less-than-iconic villain was Bane from the Dark Knight Rises.   No one knew the movie which taught us every hero should have good theme music was the Wayans brothers 80s classic  I’m Gonna Git You Sucka.  It’s hysterical. Check it out if you’re like me and never have anything to watch!

On to the update!

A Sai and Cedrek-less tribe return to merge camp and Chrissy hopes no one paid attention to the “I wanna scheme and backstab” drivel she spewed at tribal council.  Let’s put a pin in that, shall we?  Joe congratulates everyone for making it to jury, and while Mitch is relieved to have made it this far (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’” [Mitch] to no one!). He feels like he needs to take control, and push votes and tries to rebuild the remaining 5 Civa but it goes nowhere.

Shauhin thinks his “Strong 5” alliance with David, Kyle, Eva and Joe is good going forward, and that Kyle and Kamila were on his side which proves his finger isn’t quite catching the game’s pulse.  He doesn’t trust Mary (smart) but does trust Kamila (dumb). She’s a game player. Finally, Eva tells the Strong 5 that she heard Chrissy talking about getting rid of Shauhin and the strong people.

Treemail instructs them to choose pairs for the upcoming challenge.  Kyle thinks everyone wants “the best for me without looking like it’s the best for me”.  I think they’re all just wondering if they can get paired up with Joe or David.

In the end, the pairs are:

  • Shauhin and Kamila
  • David and Mary
  • Kyle and Chrissy
  • Mitch and Star
  • Joe and Eva

At the challenge, there are three stages, each with different rewards or punishments.

Stage 1: Race through a sand-filled tunnel to grab a puzzle step bag and then dig up a 2nd step.  First three (3) pairs move on. Losers are out and will all go on a journey with their vote at risk.

Stage 2: Use the puzzle steps to build a staircase then use the steps to build a rope bridge and cross it. First two (2) pairs to finish win reward (tacos!) and move to individual immunity stage. Losing pair goes back to camp with nothing.

Stage 3: Hold on to the pole for as long as you can. Winner wins individual immunity.

In Stage 1, Mitch and Star take a quick lead while Shauhin and Kamila struggle.  Unfortunately for Mitch and Star, they get caught up digging for their 2nd piece which allows Joe/Eva, David/Mary, Kyle/Chrissy to pass them by and move into Stage 2. (3 points each for “Go on a journey” [Mitch, Star, Shauhin, Kamila] to Stephanie, Will, Scott and no one!).  But first they journey over to the loser bench.

At Stage 2, it’s close at the beginning but Kyle and Chrissy begin to fall behind the powerhouses of Joe/Eva and David/Mary, who both move to the bridge portion.  David and Mary finish and move to the final stage, while Joe and Eva move VERY slowly on the bridge.  Their leisurely pace allows Kyle and Chrissy back into the race.   Moving quickly to try and pass Joe and Eva proves costly though, as Kyle and Chrissy drop!  Joe and Eva finish the bridge winning tacos and a shot at immunity in the final round. (3 points each for “Win tribal reward” [Joe, Eva, David, Mary] to Jo, Tom, George and Bobby!)

I'm right there with ya!

In Stage 3, its hold on for dear life….and Joe can’t do it. This challenge is tough on the big guys as muscles also weigh a lot, and he quickly drops (3 points for “First out in an individual challenge” [Joe] to Jo!) and is followed by David. The small and strong can more easily hold up less weight, meaning Mary and Eva are in a showdown for immunity.  Mary gives it everything she’s got but Eva was a college athlete and looks strong as hell.  Mary drops meaning (8 points for ‘Win individual immunity’ [Eva] to Tom!)

At the Journey, Kamila doesn’t want to lose her vote but also wants to protect Mitch’s vote. The game they’re playing requires some planning strategy, and that strategy seems to be “Get Star”.

The face you make when you realize they really are out to get you

Shauhin, Kamila and Mitch team up against her and Star is quickly eliminated, losing her vote.  (3 points each for “Risk your vote on a journey and succeed” [Shauhin, Mitch, Kamila] to Will, Scott and no one!)  and (1 point for “Risk your vote on a journey and fail” [Star] to Stephanie!)

Back at camp, Kyle and Chrissy are in limbo.  Chrissy things Eva and Joe are running the game and want to go for Joe.  Kyle pitches Shauhin but she won’t budge.

Somehow, this is Joe’s first food reward and while it’s everything he wanted; Eva enjoys it more. She finds a clue to a hidden advantage which she must find by tomorrow night!  (Note: there’s no scoring category for this. She’ll get points when she finds the advantage itself).

David worries that Shauhin choosing Kamila means he’s teaming with her, and he believes the lie Kyle/Kamila told him about Shauhin having an idol.  To bring Shauhin back to the alliance, David lands on taking out Kamila and Mary agrees with him.  Begrudgingly, Joe agrees as well but I don’t buy he’s really into it.

Joe tells Kyle about David’s plan, and Kyle reacts like someone gave him root canal without Novocain.   He will NOT let Kamila be the target

(1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’ [Kyle] to Kyle!)

Kyle tells Joe that Chrissy is talking about Joe as the target. And when they talk with David, Kyle’s reaction is somehow worse.  Everyone should see this reaction, think “Why does he care this much?” and infer that he’s working with Kamila.  Instead, the lunkheads only see it as “Kyle might not be as with them as we thought”.

Not the brightest bulb

Kyle and Kamila agree to target Chrissy (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’ [Kamila] to Scott!)  and they try to get Joe on board.  As the group of six argue, David begins to bully Kyle into voting Kamila, telling his “ally” he needs to let the Chrissy vote go.

An author’s aside: You’d think, at this point, David would realize why Kyle is so vehemently opposed to Kamila.  That a lightbulb would appear over his head and he’d “get it” You might think that, but you’d be wrong. The light bulb sputters on, shines dimly and briefly before fading to black.

5 points if you can tell me this character’s name.

No Google, Bing, ChatGPT or other internet sleuthing.
You know it or you don’t!

The alliance + Mary continues to argue as Kyle tells Joe that Chrissy’s after him. Eva chimes in that she heard Chrissy talking about getting the strong players out.   This alliance is on the verge of exploding, and Joe sees a rift forming between them all (5 points for “Say the title of the episode” [Joe] to Jo!).  As we head to tribal, it’s still unclear which way they’ll go.

Kyle and Mary are exhausted by the physical nature of the challenges, and the mental strain of the conversations.  Chrissy is tired of everyone liking each other and wants to play Survivor. I’m not sure if it’s lack of sleep, lack of food or lack of brain cells but she openly calls out the strong players for taking over the game.  Maybe she ate the wrong mushroom and she’s high?  YOU’RE NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT THE GAMEPLAY ON TWITTER! YOU’RE AT TRIBAL COUNCIL YOU DOPE!

FFS!

She’s sitting right in front of David, who’s shaking his head so hard I fear it might come off.  He thinks it’s funny how Chrissy suspects strong people getting together as bad when people use race, gender and other factors all the time.  For the fourth or fifth time this season, he lashes out at Chrissy about not being used as a shield by sneaky backstabbing players have in the past.

Chrissy: “I wasn’t on those seasons”

David: “You got caught on the wrong season then”

Flashback to what I said when Charity was voted out:

Wrong season to be a scheming snake

Try and keep up, Chrissy.

Kamila kicks off the voting (3 points for “Chosen to vote first” [Kamila] to Scott!) and realization hits Chrissy a little too late

Yep

David was so strong on voting for Kamila that he nearly broke the alliance apart, but Chrissy talked herself right out of the game.  She’s voted out by a score of 8-1 and becomes Juror #2.

(1 point for “Received vote against” [Shauhin] to Will!)

(8 points for “Received vote against” [Chrissy] to no one!)

(-1 point for “The tribe has spoken” [Chrissy] against no one!)

(1 point for “Jury member” [Chrissy] to no one!),

Least Valuable Player

Ok, so what does that mean for our scores?

If Tom thought it was lonely with a one-point lead, what will he think now that he’s opened a 16-point lead over 2nd place Kyle, thanks to Eva’s winning immunity and some bonus points? Jo remains in 3rd, and in striking distance. Having a real-life superhero will do that for a game. I remain in 4th, just two points behind Jo but with a 14-point gap on 5th place Will.  George drops int0 6th while Stephanie and Bobby hope Star and Mary can perform some miracles.  I mean, why not? It worked in the Bible!
