Survivor 48 - Brooklyn South Update #9

Before we get started, a reminder of who has whom:

Remaining Lifelines: None

Second, 5 bonus points each to Tom, Jo and Stephanie for knowing that “As if!” is from Clueless.  She definitely was!

On to the update!

Back at camp, Mary is shocked and demoralized that David is gone. While Mary despairs that she’s an easy boot, Eva thinks if she keeps her head down and is a reliable vote, she can stick around.  Oh, and not to expect Eva’s idol to save her.  I’m sure Mary feels inspired. Do you?

Star and Mary talk about the “other 4” forming up along with Mitch and Kamila to take out one of the Strong 4 and the Strong 4 won’t see it coming.  Ironically, Star is right, but not for a good reason. Generally, the “bottom” alliance never gains traction and instead turns on each other to last another day.

The next morning, Shauhin thinks Mitch is in a good spot because he’s a free agent (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’” [Mitch] to George!). In fact, Shauhin notices that if he teams with Kamila they might start something to rival the Strong 4.  Joe agrees, suggesting either Star, Mary or Mitch as the target. No doubt he remembers Kyle’s reaction when David brought up Kamila.

No going after my super-duper ultra mega secret #1!

Star can’t stand that Mitch falls asleep so easily but what really gets her is how much Mitch snores.  But she will put that all aside if it means they have a chance to advance (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’” [Star] to Stephanie!). She tells The Bottom 4 that Joe is the target.

Unfortunately for Star, Kamila is a double-agent (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’” [Kamila] to Scott!).  She immediately tells Kyle about the plan for Joe.  Kyle thinks Joe can carry them to final 6 at least but supports Kamila if she wants to get him out now if there’s no trace back to him.

And then, Kyle tells Joe that Kamila is locked in on the 6 but he worries that the usual Survivor strategy and backstabbing may not win this year since the season has been primarily about making emotional connections.

At the reward challenge, they slither snakelike over sand dunes with their feet tied together and their hands tied to their side. Upon reaching the end, they untie themselves and maneuver a buoy through a rope maze to unlock three rings. First person to land all three in a ring toss wins chicken and waffles on another Fijian island.  The idea of which causes them to break into song.

Who knew Survivor was a musical?

Shauhin gets out to a big lead but it’s Kyle who finishes the slither portion first and leaves his ally Kamila in the dust as she wonders how to do this challenge at all.  The rope maze proves difficult, and it’s Joe who finishes untying first but Kyle’s right behind him.

At the ring toss, Kyle, Eva and Joe each land one, but it’s Kyle and Joe in a showdown after each lands their 2nd.  We get a classic Survivor fake out making us think Joe lands his 3rd, but it is Kyle who manages to do so!   (8 points for “Win individual reward” [Kyle] to Kyle!).  As is Survivor custom, he gets to choose three people to go with him, and Mitch (who’s starving) is almost as disappointed as Carol (who has him in Fantasy) when he’s not chosen.  (3 points each for “Chosen by someone else to go on reward” [Eva, Kamila and Shauhin] to Tom, Scott and Will!)

At reward, Shauhin thinks food makes all the difference while Eva seems unconcerned with the next few votes as The Four agreed that Star is the target.  Kyle reveals why he chose who he did – he needs Mitch, Star and Mary to be pissed so they’d revolt against Joe.

Back at camp, Joe’s bothered Kyle didn’t choose him but suspects Kyle’s brilliance in having him babysit. Joe takes the opportunity to tell Mary why David was voted out, and that everyone sees Mary as the villain who corrupted David.  Mary finds his attempt at jury management off-putting.  She tries to get Mitch on board for a 4v4 vote, and Mitch tells us that if he doesn’t make a move now, he has no shot.

An aside Joe’s view on “babysitting” and how he talked to Mary along with Eva’s attitude toward Mary and her lack of concern about tribal leaves me feeling there’s an air of “us and them”.  If they’re in Final Tribal, Mary’s voting for whoever else is with them.  Also, It’s only a matter of time before Shauhin and/or Kyle flip on them.  That’s when the fun begins again.

At the Immunity challenge, it’s “use a rope to balance a wobbly table while stacking blocks to spell IMMUNITY” time.  This is a frustrating, nerve-wracking challenge.  Jeff’s offer of rice for 3 sit-outs is quickly shot down.

Kamila gets to 6 letters, drops. Kyle and Joe get to 6 and drop.

And drop

And drop

And drop

Moving at turtle speed, Shauhin gets to 7….and drops.

And Kyle is at 7….and drops.

And so is Mitch…..and drops.

Meanwhile, Star is so frustrated by this challenge that she’s completely checked out.

Not the face you make when your game is on the line

Finally, Joe channels his inner “Don’t wake the kids” slow motion, places his 8th block and puts everyone out of their misery by getting back to the platform and ending the challenge. (8 points for “Win individual immunity” [Joe] to Jo!).  Looks like The Bottom 4 will need a new target.

Back at camp, Mitch telling Star to play her shot in the dark makes her immediately believe she shouldn’t. Mitch then tells Shauhin about Star’s Bottom 4 plan. So much for that.  “You can’t move forward with people you don’t trust” and he doesn’t trust Mary or Star.

Mitch. Buddy. Bubbale (Google it, Gentiles). Saying this is the same as saying “I trust Joe, Eva, Shauhin and Kyle”.  I hate saying this because I like Mitch but if he really believes this, he’s either dumb or blind.

Kamila sees Mitch playing too safe and since they need his number, they can’t make their move. When Mary pitches going after Kyle, Kamila turns around and throws Mary under the bus to Joe and Mitch. Having found no luck with Kyle as a target, Mary shifts and throws Star out to Shauhin, saying she’s an easier vote.  She knows the vote will be her or Star tonight.

Star is worried and in what’s likely a Survivor first, raps her confessional with “My enemies are plottin’” (5 points for “Say the title of the episode” [Star] to Stephanie!).  Now available for download on iTunes for $0.99!

At tribal, Mitch talks about how individuals, groups and small groups within groups seem to move around but Mary can’t decide what’s real and what’s not.  So how do you navigate without information?  Shauhin thinks its

Paranoia won’t get you anything but sent packing

Star talks about how Mitch didn’t stutter when he told her to play her shot in the dark, so maybe she should take him seriously. Joe sees her as confident, but confidence is only positive if you’re right.  Mary agrees – trust is what matters most (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’ [Mary] to Bobby!). Kamila agrees – it helps keep her brain clean.

While Shauhin thinks leaving the wrong people in the game can threaten getting to Final 3, Mary just wants to make it one more day.

Finally, Jeff asks Star if she’d play her shot in the dark if everyone told her to. Maybe. Maybe not. She’s chaotic that way.

At the vote, it’s Eva who goes first (3 points for “First person to vote at tribal” [Eva] to Tom!).  Mary was right – it was her or Star tonight. Her pleading for another day was also the right short-term tactic as Star is voted out 5-3, becoming Juror #4.

(3 points for “Received vote against” [Mary] to Bobby!)

(5 points for “Received vote against” [Star] to Stephanie!)

(-1 point for “The tribe has spoken” [Star] against Stephanie!)

(1 point for “Jury member” [Star] to Stephanie!)

But what does that mean for our scores?

Tom’s 29-point lead grew to 31 points but Jo’s making a move and has taken over 2nd place from 3rd place Kyle.  I remain in 4th place, 26 points behind Kyle, with 5th place Will a few behind me.  6th place Stephanie may have passed 7th place George for now, but while she won the live game, Star being voted out means she lost this one. Sorry Stephanie!  For now, she remains 9 points ahead of 8th place Bobby who’s trying to figure out where it all went wrong.
