Super-into-himself
Rizo and super athletic MC tied for the most choices, with 6 of us taking each.
Nate was 3rd with 4 choices.
Alex, Jason, Jawan, Kristina, Matt, Shannon, Sophie, Sophi, and Steven
were all not chosen.
Lesson
learned: You’ll never gain any points on the leaders by choosing the most
likely people!
Second, 5
bonus points to Iyasah for correctly naming Jim Carrey’s Dumb and Dumber as
Lloyd Christmas! Third, 5 bonus
points to me for recognizing Bryce Dallas Howard.
On to the
update!
We pick back
up at with Alex and Sophi at Kele beach following Jeremiah’s torch being
snuffed, and neither can believe they’ve survived the Kele carnage. The next day, the three tribes are brought
together for what looks like a competition, but Jeff fakes them out. It’s time
to drop their buffs! Sophi is so happy
to get rid of her buff that she buries it on the spot.
The new
tribes are:
Hina: Matt, Jason, Jawan, Savannah, Nate, Rizo, and
Sophie
Kele: Alex,
Kristina, Sophie, Steven, MC, Sage and Shannon
So Hina has 4
former Uli, 2 former Hina and Sophie, while Kele has 4 former Hina, 2 former
Uli and Alex.
MC likes
that she has four former Hina, but headed to the disaster area that is Kele
beach, that’s all she’s happy for,
At Hina, Sophi feels like she won the lottery at Hina’s well-stocked camp and plans to play the middle in the upcoming war between former Hina/Uli tribes. Rizo revels in the uncomfortable feeling of a tribe swap because he’s in the majority. He laughs with Savannah as they lie in the hammocks Hina worked so hard to win. While Nate makes fire, Sophi reveals that she wants to align with the majority Uli, likening herself to a lost puppy waiting to be adopted (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’” [Sophi] to no one!)
Seeing her
as loyal and fun to be around, Nate likes the idea of bringing Sophi in as they
bond over his missing his kids. Sophi also gets in as the “tribe girls” with
Savannah, which lands well with the former Uli queen since “She looks like one
of her friends from back home”. (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’” [Savannah]
to Brian!).
Survivor
lesson: People
look to team up with people who look and act like themselves.
Alex made
Sophi promise not to tell anyone about his playing the idol, but Sophi breaks
Rule #1: STFU and tells Savannah to…say it with me now…build trust.
Soapbox
moment: I don’t
think this is a big deal since the idol has already been played and it does
build trust with Savannah. It does,
however, show a weakness in Sophi’s game. Sharing secrets to gain trust only
ensures one thing: Those secrets will be shared with others and for the same
reason.
Finally,
Savannah tries to connect with Jason, but he doesn’t sound really into it,
which is bizarre given how the numbers stack against him. Using her interviewing skills, she gets Matt
to reveal his past – he was high up in the finance world which she sees as a
giant red flag.
Over at Kele, the former Uli and Hina think the Kele beach could have been worse. That’s just Copium though. It’s a disaster. Alex jokes about not having anything to eat or cook with, and Sophie may not be able to handle it. Shannon sees that she’s been on “Survivor vacation”. Steven likes how level-headed and calm she is as they introduce themselves. He also sees that Sage is REALLY WEIRD, but he’s ok with that too.
Shannon
brings her morning beach meditation to the new Kele tribe, and while they all take
part, Steven isn’t into it. He thinks Shannon is a shark hiding in a
spiritual guide’s body. As with Sophi on
Hina, Alex thinks he can hide in the middle of the former Hina/Uli war and is
open for business.
Kristina and
Shannon talk about teaming with Alex, which is music to Shannon’s ears. She was Core Four on Uli, but those allies are
at Hina beach now. Sage wants to trust her but thinks Shannon overdoing the
religion and meditation is too fake. The tribe split may come down to her vs.
Shannon.
At the
immunity and reward challenge, 5 members of each tribe will risk life and limb,
jumping into the snake-infested ocean. They’ll pull the other two members
safely on a boat to collect cubes from floating platforms and then pull the
boat ashore. One tribe member will transfer 10 smaller cubes across a balance
beam, and then the rest of the tribe will carry the 10 they collected across
the beams by holding them on a wooden plank between them. Once they are all across, the tribes have to
stack them.
First tribe
to stack all 20 wins immunity and reward, in the form of a giant basket of
fruit. Jeff doesn’t get quite the
response he expected when he asks Sophie what she thinks. This is what she eats
when she wants to lose weight, Jeff! She
wanted carbs!
All I can think of is the fit that Survivor 46’s Liz threw over not being picked by Q to go on the Applebee’s reward.
The rest of
the tribe is drooling over it, so Sophie’s take isn’t landing too well.
Finally, Kristina takes her off the hook saying it looks great.
They’re
about even when they get to the beach. Matt and MC go over the beams and while
Matt falls a couple times, MC makes it look easy. She’s seriously athletic.
Kele starts
stacking first and it’s quickly obvious that the tower will be too high for
anyone to reach. MC lifts Shannon, but she’s too short to finish it. Hina starts to catch up as Nate gets them
close. MC uses Alex as a stepstool to push Shannon higher but they’re still too
short. Finally, Kele Holds MC up by her
feet – a really risky move since she could knock down the whole stack if she
falls forward – but it pays off, MC
finishes it off and Kele finally wins immunity and reward!
(6 total
points for “Win Tribe Immunity” and “Win Tribe Reward” [MC] to Scott, Jay,
Carol, Iyasah, Ricky and Marissa!]!)
(6 total
points for “Win Tribe Immunity” and “Win Tribe Reward” [Steven] to Kristyn!)
(6 total

(6 total

(6 total

While Matt thinks it’s finally time to start playing Survivor, Sophi thinks heading back to Tribal means....
At Hina
beach, Rizo knows they have the numbers, but he doesn’t have a vote yet. And
since everyone else already knows about his Beware Advantage, he tells Sophi
that it’s time to go find the idol (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’” [Rizo]
to Scott, Jay, Carol, Iyasah, Dalphyne, and Brian!) but he never gets the
chance to dig at the water well, so Savannah does it for him, digging up the
map and key he’ll need to find the Idol (2 points for “Complete Stage 1 a
Beware Advantage” [Savannah] to Brian!).
After receiving the key and map, Rizo quickly finds the chest and takes
possession of his idol! (5 points for “Find Hidden Immunity Idol” [Rizo] to
Scott, Jay, Carol, Iyasah, Dalphyne, and Brian!)
Back at
camp, the former Uli’s talk about who to vote out while Matt and Jason talk to
each other. That’s not going to get any of them anywhere, so Matt engages Rizo
and Savannah about going for Sophi, while telling us he really wants to
blindside Nate.
Rizo and
Sophi, who’s now an adopted member of the Uli tribe, like Jason more than Matt
but not by much. Jason again makes the odd choice to play offense, threatening
to play his shot in the dark rather than turn on Matt. Savannah picks it up as
Jason not willing to work with them, and she’s right. For someone who wants to look like the least
appealing target, he has an odd way of going about it. He could just say yes to voting for
Matt, then play his shot in the dark anyway.
Weird.
Matt pitches his Nate blindside idea to Jawan, thinking he might be open for a big move. Following Pretend Points Rule #7: Always Say Yes, Jawan plays it perfectly but has no plans to follow through. He tells Nate, Savannah and Rizo about Matt’s offer, leading Nate to declare Matt dead to him (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’” [Nate] to Roberta, Ricky, Brian and Gloria!!)
At tribal
council, Nate thinks Sophi is with them, which she eagerly agrees to. Note to
Jason: That’s how you play from the minority. He didn’t want to play with them
at all, which Savannah and Rizo rightly see as red flags. The only reason he
might be safe is that Matt played too hard, too soon pitching Nate. When Matt says he didn’t want to throw Jason
and Sophi under the bus, Nate stops him saying he did so throw them by saying
“Anyone but me”.
Now, I love a spicy tribal council, and I’d love to see a good old fashioned argument but Nate reacted to Matt saying “anyone buy me” like the old man he is.
“Anyone but me” isn’t actively saying “Let’s
vote Jason”. In fact, Matt notes that
it’s a strategy that won Sandra the game twice! (5 points for “Mention a
previous season’s player” [Matt]!).
I honestly
have no idea which way the votes are going to go as both former Hina’s played
this so poorly. In what could be his
last moments in the game, Jason is chosen to vote first (3 points for “First
person chosen to vote” [Jason]!)
We see some
of the votes. Sophi’s mocking “Hina! Hina! Hina!” chant as she writes Jason’s
name down has me laughing out loud. I like her.
Meanwhile, Nate gleefully votes Matt, telling him to kick rocks (5
points for “Say the title of the episode” [Nate] to Roberta, Ricky, Brian and
Gloria!!).
When the
votes are revealed, we see that Matt’s sloppiness outweighed Jason’s reticence
and the dreadlocked finance whiz is voted out 4-2-1.
(1 point
for “Received vote against” [Nate] to Roberta, Ricky, Brian and Gloria!!)
(2 points
for “Received vote against” [Jason] to no one!)
(4 points
for “Received vote against” [Matt] to no one!)
(-2 points for “The Tribe Has Spoken” [Matt] against no one!)
It was a
light-scoring episode, as Matt’s sloppy play led him to 8 points which is two
points more than Steven, Kristina, Sophie, MC, Alex, Rizo, Shannon and Sage who
had 6 each. Jawan wins the weekly “Sir
Not Appearing In This Film” prize, by being seen and heard while scoring a big,
fat zero. He checks in just ahead (behind?) Sophi who put up a single point
despite being featured in virtually every Hina conversation.
In our game, MC and Rizo were chosen as a pair by four of us. Iyasah, who had the pair, can thank Jim Carrey for taking over first place! Leading all scorers this week, she bumps Carol into 2nd. Ricky remains in 3rd. I moved into 4th thanks to bonus points of my own. Jay remains in 5th, just two ahead of 6th place Marissa. Kristyn’s combination of Old Man Nate and Steven drops her to 7th, a point ahead of now 8th place Brian. Dalphyne’s Rizo/Sage combination jumps her out of the cellar and into 9th. But if one rises, another must fall and that means Gloria and Roberta occupy the bottom two spots this week.
