Survivor 48 - Brooklyn South Update #6

Before we get started, a reminder of who has who following the final redraft:

Remaining lifelines:  Chrissy, Mitch, Cedrek, Kamila

Second, 5 bonus points each to Tom, Jo and George for knowing the voice actor for the iconic Darth Vader was James Earl Jones!

Third, 5 points to Scott, Jo and George for keeping the same players through the merge.

Housekeeping’s done, on to the update!

We pick up following Charity’s ejection.  I wonder if she thinks Tribal Council is stressful now? Chrissy realizes it’s no fun, and Mitch thought it was going to be 12-1 against Sai.  Being on the outside sucks and it makes him wonder who he can trust (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’” [Mitch] to no one !). He doesn’t want to talk to Sai, but he has to.

Sai thinks she’s got nine lives, and thinks they’re obsessed with her.  She’s right, sort of.  They are obsessed with her, but in the “GTFOH” (Google it, old people) way. She voted Cedrek because he voted her twice and she wants him to feel panic.  Blaming Charity for the vote is a nice touch.

Mitch shares his story the following morning while talking with Shauhin, and bonds with Joe over it as well.  Sai and Kyle count up the number of times Sai has been voted for.  It’s a lot.  (14 if you’re scoring at home  or even if you’re alone [h/t The Schmooze].  (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’” [Sai] to Scott!)

Sai feels like making connections with people she wants to vote out is fake, and Sahuhin recognizes that.  Later, Shauhin notices that Cedrek, Mitch and Sai all came to talk with him because they’re on the outs which makes him feel in control of the game. If he can maintain control, he can win it.

You know it or you don’t!

It’s a Survivor classic at the immunity challenge, holding a handle connected to a bucket containing 25% of their pre-game body weight.  They are split into Orange and Purple groups. Each group will attend tribal council separately and each will have an immunity winner. The final person standing wins reward for their group and will attend tribal last guaranteeing them a spot on the jury.

  • Orange team: Star, Joe, Mitch, Chrissy, Eva, Sai
  • Purple team: Kyle, Shauhin, David, Kamila, Mary

Before Jeff can finish saying “This challenge is on”, Cedrek drops.  FFS! This guy is the worst competitor in Survivor history, and I don’t think it’s particularly close. In fact, he is only slightly ahead of Bhanu for the worst gameplay ever.  Every season needs a laughingstock, I suppose.  (3 points for “First person out in an individual challenge” [Cedrek] to no one!)

This is a test of strength and it’s quickly down to Eva and Joe on Orange vs. David and Kyle on Purple.  David is so strong here and the longer the comp goes on, the more smack talk we hear.  He makes this contest look so easy that I wonder if they gave him Mary’s bucket to hold up.

Shauhin: “They’re the reason I don’t take my shirt off on the show”
Jeff: “It is a bit of a fitness magazine”
Indeed

Eva finally drops, meaning Joe wins for Orange (8 points for “Win individual immunity” [Joe] to Jo!).  Kyle struggles while David continues to hold the bucket with a level of nonchalant arrogance that makes me hope he slips.  But he doesn’t, and Kyle gives in (8 points for “Win individual immunity” [David] to George!)

It seemed inevitable that Joe would face off with David. Both are built like Greek gods carved out of marble and at 22 minutes in, here we are.  The record for this comp is 38 minutes (a classic which Gabler won).  Fast forward to the 39-minute mark, and they’re going strong.  At the 44-minute mark David is still making it look easy while Joe finally starts to struggle and drops, meaning Purple wins reward and David still hasn’t even shown the slightest bit of effort.   That was an incredible performance.  (3 points each for “Win tribal reward” [Shauhin, Kyle, David, Mary, Kamila, and Cedrek] to Will, Kyle, George, Bobby, and 2 no ones!)

The teams stay in place for the afternoon, with the losers going to the empty Civa camp.

At Winner camp, they are all so ecstatic about seeing a Survivor record that David feels like he’s in the #1 position of the game.  He should ask Shauhin about that.  Cedrek is concerned, and while Kyle thinks Cedrek is the easy vote he’s also wondering if now is the time to shoot for Sahuhin, a much bigger target.

Shauhin, David and Mary agree on Cedrek, and tell the target that Shauhin is the vote.  Mr. In charge doesn’t like being a smokescreen but goes along with the plan.  Naturally, Cedrek believes Kyle 100% when Kyle brings it to him (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’” [Kyle] to Iyasah!) and feels he could potentially trust Kyle going forward (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’” [Cedrek] to no one!)

Meanwhile, Kyle and Kamila laugh with each other about being the most undercover duo in Survivor history.  They agree to manufacture a story to tell Daviid about Sahuhin having an idol in hopes that will move him to vote Shauhin.  David nods and smiles but I don’t think he’s really on it.

At Loser camp, Joe thinks Mitch and Sai are on the outs, and while he talks strategy with Sai he’s not really working with her. Sai tries her luck with Eva but Eva sees her as a chaos creator and wants her gone, even while recognizing the threat Mitch poses.

Star doesn’t want to make jury and decide who else wins a million dollars. That’s for suckers.

She wants to take out the strong people and have them vote for her to win it. That’s the spirit!

Chrissy tells Sai she wants Mitch out, which Sai believes since Chrissy has done everything she’s said she will.  That’s bad news for Sai, since Chrissy really thinks she’s a chaotic PITA. Talking with Joe and Eva, they decide to tell Sai it’s Mitch, who will use his block-a-vote to prevent Sai from playing her shot-in-the-dark.  Joe likes the plan but sees Mitch as a threat too (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’” [Joe] to Jo!)

Tribal #1 (Joe, Star, Eva, Chrissy, Mitch, Sai) starts with the challenge.  Joe reminds everyone that he’s a goodhearted hero. He’s the easiest guy to root for.  Star needed to know two things: Where’s everyone’s head at and for the love of God, is it me? Now she’s funny too?    Where was this hiding the first 10 days?

Chrissy notes that they all agreed to talk with each other, so no one felt awkward.  When I played Survivor at GenCon, one of my tribe mates called this “Speed Dating” and it’s a perfect description.  Thanks for that, Evan!

Sai thought Eva and Joe were honest and genuine. Chrissy thinks having these two traits on Survivor is funny. She sees loyalty to an alliance as threatening  - no one can build a resume since everyone in it will have the same story.  She’s definitely someone who’d flip on an alliance, but not tonight.

Even if you think that, why would you say it aloud????

Jeff calls for the vote, finally putting this tribal out of its misery and Chrissy is up (3 points for “Chosen to vote first at Tribal Council” [Chrissy] to no one!).  When Sai goes to vote, she finds that her vote has been blocked. (2 points for “Play a secret advantage” [Mitch] to no one!).  As the votes are read, it becomes clear that Lady Chaos never really had a chance.  She’s tossed by a vote of 5-0 and doesn’t make jury.  (5 points for “Received vote against” [Sai] to Scott!), (-1 point for “The tribe has spoken” [Sai] against Scott!)

Chaos doesn’t rule this day

At Tribal #2, Kamila considers who she’d want on the jury while Shauhin thinks it’s too early to think that way. He continues, saying game longevity requires us to play with people we can trust and count on.  He says that to Jeff, but that’s a direct message to David.

Cedrek believes he’s seen brilliant gameplay around him.  He has, but he hasn’t been a part of it.  Kyle thinks tonight might be a good opportunity to take out a great player and build for the long term, which is a message to Cedrek “You’re safe. Don’t play your shot in the dark”.  David feels safe for now, but power is fleeting while Shauhin thought today was about not showing panic.  It’s like the trust-fall team building exercise. You must believe they’ll catch you. Jeff thinks if they all trust each other, that someone has to be blindsided. Mary says the message is “It’s not personal”

It's just business

At the vote, Mary is up first (3 points for “Chosen to vote first at Tribal Council” [Mary] to Bobby!).  As the votes come in, Cedrek went for Shauhin but everyone else went for Cedrek.  He’s voted out 5-1 and becomes Juror #1 (1 point for “Received vote against” [Shauhin] to Will!), (5 points for “Received vote against” [Cedrek] to no one!), (-1 point for “The tribe has spoken” [Cedrek] to no one!), and (1 point for “Jury member” [Cedrek] to no one!)

Long overdue

So what does this mean for our scores?

Kyle and Tom continue to battle atop the scoreboard, with Tom taking a one-point advantage this week. Jo takes a big jump into 3rd thanks to Big Joe’s immunity win, pushing me into 4th an Will into 5th. George had been slowly gaining the last couple of weeks, but he EXPLODED into 6th this week thanks to David’s record-setting performance.  He knocks Stephanie into 7th and Bobby into the bottom.
