Second, A
fun story about this week’s bonus points. When I posted it, I thought Rocky’s
chicken-chasing scene, coming from Rocky I where Creed wins the fight, would be
a good trick question. In fact, the
scene is from Rocky II where Rocky wins. So it was a trick question, but the
trick was on me!
As a result,
5 bonus points each to Carol and Iyasah for knowing Rocky’s
chicken-chasing scene was from Rocky II, and that Rocky wins the fight
at the end.
On to the
update!
Back At Camp
Steven is excited about executing a perfect, vengeful strategic blindside as we return to camp following Sophie’s boot. Sage is relaxed following the trauma of the last few votes that went against her. Savannah is shocked people were on board with her plan. Rizo can’t believe he still has his idol. That makes two of us, kid.
Every week,
we hear how Sophi needs to make a big move and is ready to flip on Savannah and
Rizo, and this week’s no different. Kristina is on board to join her as she
desperately wants Savannah out.
Reward Challenge
Savannah
visibly struggles in the intro. Good. If you want a million dollars, you better
suffer!
In this challenge, they need to clear a bamboo high-step, collect a bag, maneuver the bag through a ladder bridge, and go under another obstacle to collect two more bags. Once complete, open the bag that contains the sandbag matching their color and then land that sandbag on top of a very high pole. First person to do it wins a Mexican feast reward and a night at the Sanctuary.
Steven jumps
out to an early lead, with Savannah in 2nd place. He’s quickly
untying all three bags to find the right color sandbag as Savannah unlocks her
third. He misses his first few shots allowing everyone else to get back into
the challenge. And they come up short, or over, or bounce off again and again
until Savannah finally makes one stick! (8 points for “Win Individual
Reward” [Savannah] to Scott, Jay and Brian!).
She gets to
choose two people to come with her. In past seasons, this would be a strategic decision,
but the battle lines are clear, and she wastes no time in taking her allies. (3
points for “Chosen By Someone Else To Go On Reward” [Rizo] to Iyasah!) and (3
points for “Chose By Someone Else To Go On Reward” [Sophi] to Ricky!).
At The Sanctuary
They tear into the Mexican food like ravenous wolves. I can’t say that I truly understand how good that food must taste after so long without but having dieted a few times in the past I have an inkling. Hunger is the best seasoning, Ken Follett says.
Sophi wants to turn on these two but thinks being chosen to be on reward is a sign that she should stick with them. She also thinks there will be animosity back at camp and that by choosing them, Savannah showed her cards.
Deciding to be all-in with Rizo and Savannah, she tells them about her Knowledge Is Power advantage, and that she’ll use it on Steven to take his steal-a-vote, which Rizo assures her he has.
Having not
used her advantage to steal his idol, Rizo sees Sophi as a true, locked in
alliance member. Convinced he knows what Steven has, Rizo thinks they have the
upper hand. He’s not far off-base, but
he is off it. Now, I’m looking forward to Sophi trying to steal Steven’s “Steal-A-Vote”
but it’s a Block-A-Vote and they play it before tribal. We close the Sanctuary
with letters from home bringing them all to tears.
Back At Camp
Sage sees
Savannah winning reward as karma for her prioritizing vengeance on Sophie over
strategy going for Savannah. Kristina tells Sage and Steven that Sophi is ready
to flip but is worried that the reward could change her mind. Solid insight - that’s exactly what happened.
Steven shows
the two ladies his Block-A-Vote advantage and tells them he plans to use it on
Savannah.
When the winners return, Savannah awkwardly thanks them for being understanding. Yes, yes. Thank you for not being mad at me that you went to bed cold, wet and hungry while dealing with rats as we ate, drank, and slept in warm beds at the Sanctuary.
Immunity Challenge
In this
challenge, they put one foot on the end of a hinged beam. On the other end is a
ball on a plate with a small boundary around it. When the ball drops, you’re out. Last person
standing wins immunity.
The
challenge barely starts and Rizo drops out faster than I can type the sentence. (3 points for “First Person Out In
Individual Challenge” [Rizo] to Iyasah!).
Sophi and Kristina drop right behind him leaving Sage, Steven and
Savannah to battle it out.
Savannah
looks strong. Sage looks steady and Steven looks shaky right before he drops
leaving Savannah and Sage to battle it out.
Their “friendly chatter” begins. These two have been on opposite sides
since Day 1, and both of them want to win badly.
They reach
the 24-minute mark, which is how long it took Queen Dee of Survivor 45 to win
the challenge. Sage tries an “I can save us” tactic to get Savannah to drop,
but the villain is wise to these tactics and doesn’t budge. She swears that
Sage is safe but urges her to keep fighting and not to quit.
Sage feels
some hope when Savannah’s ball finally starts moving at the 35-minute mark, but
hunger and exhaustion win out. Having nothing left to fight with, Sage finally
drops meaning Savannah wins again! (8
points for “Win Individual Immunity” [Savannah] to Scott, Jay and Brian!).
Sage did great but doesn’t want to hear it.
She’s the season’s villain but being 100% honest, Savannah is FANTASTIC
at these comps.
Back At Camp
Savannah
thinks she needs to win out to make it to the Final Tribal, and she’s probably
right. Their trio wants Steven out. Rizo
goes to work on Steven, guiding him toward Sophi now that Savannah is safe but
on the other side, he makes convincing arguments to Sage about targeting Steven
and shockingly, she’s considering it. I don’t really understand why, as Sophi
is still an option.
Kristina sees Steven as the only person left who can beat Savannah in challenges, and she is his tightest ally. She’s pushing for Sophi as the target. When Kristina tells Steven about Sophi being the target, she lets it slip that Sage brought his name up.
Steven and
Sage agree that Kristina is sloppy, but Steven is the only hope against
Savannah in challenges.
After
hearing that Steven was targeting her, Sophi decides she’ll play her Knowledge
Is Power advantage on him tonight. What
she doesn’t know is that Steven’s Block-A-Vote is played before tribal, and he
plays it on Savannah (2 points for “Use A Secret Advantage” [Steven] to
Carol, Roberta and Gloria!). That
done, Steven tells us the die is cast. (5 points for “Say The Episode Title”
[Steven] to Carol, Roberta and Gloria!)
Sophi
recognizes that while Steven’s “Steal-A-Vote’ is powerful, Rizo’s idol is more
powerful and that taking it means she’s guaranteed to be in the Finale. “You
didn’t even know him 22 days ago. Take the idol and suck it up”, her
grandmother would say and I agree!
Tribal Council
The game has been fluid since the merge, but the fallout from the last vote, and Savannah’s decision on who to leave behind on reward, means a new war is brewing. Steven thinks cold, wet, hungry, rat-infested nights build character while Kristina thinks Savannah could have used the reward to bring her in as a number. Sophi thinks she’s on the chopping block while Rizo can’t believe he’s had his idol for 7 tribal councils already.
Sage thinks
Kristina could be telling the truth about not being aligned with Savannah, or
she could be auditioning for a role. Steven wonders aloud about how difficult
it is to counteract plans you don’t truly know about, and that he’s made plenty
of mistakes trying to do so. (1 point for “Mention ‘in this game’” [Steven]
to Carol, Roberta and Gloria!).
“Whoever comes out on top tonight controls the rest of the game”, Rizo
says taking us to the vote. Indeed.
Kristina is
chosen to vote first (3 points for “First Person Chosen To Vote” [Kristina]
to Dalphyne!) , but before she does Sophi declares that “It’s Survivor 101
that if you have something in your pocket to not be vocal about it”. And I agree 100%.
She plays her secret Knowledge Is Power advantage, (2 points for “Play A Secret Advantage” [Sophi] to Ricky!) on…Steven but since he’s already used his advantage, he doesn’t have it. Her reaction is priceless.
Still not
understanding what’s happened, she thinks he gave the advantage to someone
else. Rizo and Savannah look completely dejected as Steven ups the chaos by
saying he didn’t give it to anyone else.
For my
money, this is the weakest move of the season. She knew Rizo had the idol. Take
it, be safe and apologize later. They can be mad, but they still need you as a
number!
At the vote,
however, the chaos is turned around. Rizo’s work on Kristina and Sage pays
off. They both flip on Steven, sending
him to the Ponderosa dumbfounded.
(1 point
for “Received Vote Against” [Sophi] to Ricky!)
(4 points
for “Received Vote Against” [Steven] to Carol, Roberta and Gloria!)
(-2
points for “The Tribe Has Spoken” [Steven] to Carol, Roberta and Gloria!)
(2 points
for “Juror #6” [Steven] to Carol, Roberta and Gloria!)
I expect
this nonsense from Kristina. While I like how sarcastic, funny and
passive-aggressive Sage is, this is a colossally stupid move made 100% from
fear.
So, what
does that mean for our scores?
Winning Reward and Immunity led Savannah to
the top of the Survivor scoreboard this week.
She’s followed by Steven who named the episode, played his advantage and
received all those votes against. Everyone else put up a few points except Sage,
the scoreboard no-show.
In our game,
I maintain a 20-point lead over 2nd place Carol. She’s got a 22-point lead over 3rd
place Iyasah. 4th place Gloria may be a rookie, but she will look to
finish off her strong first season this week by staying a few points ahead of 5th
place Jay. Brian and Roberta move up to 6th and 7th,
respectively. They knock Dalphyne into 8th.
Ricky remains in 9th but the biggest faller this week is Marissa whose
Sage pick drops her into 10th, while Kristyn who made the same pick
remains in this week’s cellar.
